Microdermabrasion is a skin care technique which scrapes out the top layer(Stratum Corneum) of the skin. Once the unwanted old and dead skins of the top layer are scraped out, new cells begin to grow to replace the removed outer layer of skin.
It is a modern method used to treat skin scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, sun damaged skin etc.
How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Once the old cells are scraped out and new cells grow on the epidermis of the skin, resulting in the replacement of the old scarred or pigmented skin with clear skin.
The equipment used for microdermabrasion usually consists of two concentric cylindrical tubes. The point of contact of the tube with the skin has a vaccum action. The doctor or dermatologist places the tube in the affected area of the skin that needs to be treated. The vaccum action of the tube pulls the skin closer. Abrasive crystals like Aluminium oxide, Sodium Chloride etc are shot from the inner tube to the skin area that is to be treated. The crystals remove the top layer of the skin containing unwanted scars and debris and disposes it out through the outer concentric tube.
It can cause a mild pricking sensation while the crystals are shot at the skin, but it is only a temporary sensation.
Microdermabrasion - Side Effects:
At times, the abrasive action and the removal of the skin can lead to inflamation or swelling in the skin. It can last a few hours to days depending on the individual skin type. It is effective for mild scars, however deep scars can be removed by treatment over a period of time.
Home treatment kits for microdermabrasion are also available. The kit would comprise of cream with mild abrasive crystals impregnented in it. The microdermabrasion cream can be applied on the affected area of the skin around the region of the acne scars. It has to be left to dry for a while. Once, it dries out, it can be removed with a scrub that comes along with the kit. It is necessary to read the manual that comes along with the kit before using.
